Two hurt as scaffolding collapses on construction site

Two people have been hurt after scaffolding collapsed at a major construction site in a busy town centre.

Emergency services are at the scene of the incident in Garrard Street, Reading, after the structure gave way at about 11.30am this morning.

No fatalities are reported.

However, teams are still combing the debris and using thermal imaging equipment to discover if anyone is still trapped.

Traffic is said to be building up and there are road closures surrounding the site where buildings are being demolished in preparation for the new Station Hill development.

A multi-storey car park is also blocked adding to the traffic chaos.

It is understood there are at least 10 emergency services vehicles on the scene, including paramedics and officers from Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue service, GetReading reports.

It is not clear what caused the scaffolding to collapse.

A spokesperson for South Central Ambulance said: "“We received multiple 999 calls just after 11.15am all reporting that scaffolding had collapsed from the front of Greyfriars House, Greyfriars Road, Reading, with some of the calls suggesting one or two people had been buried by the collapsed structure.

“We currently have a paramedic team leader in a rapid response vehicle and an ambulance at the scene and our Hazardous Area Response Team are en route along with a further two ambulances.

“Our staff are currently assessing two patients – one with chest pains and one with a head injury – and the Fire Service are using their thermal imaging equipment to search the collapsed scaffolding.”

The Station Hill development in Reading town centre will eventually feature 250,000 sq ft of office space, 538 build to rent homes and the creation of 2,500 jobs.

The demolition will eventually see the removal of the derelict Friars Walk shopping centre, and, later in the summer, the demolition of the Garrard Street car park.

It was also revealed the third phase of the plan includes a hotel, although more details of this are not imminent.
