Two gifts from Notts County hand Hartlepool victory as playoff chase stumbles

Hartlepool United entered the race for the National League playoffs as they secured a 2-0 win over Notts County this afternoon.

The hosts had much the better of the first half as Joe McDonnell was required to keep out efforts from Ryan Donaldson and Rob Harker.

Notts' only chance of note was a strike from Callum Roberts which saw Ben Killip make a low save as boss Neal Ardley made a tactical switch at half-time by replacing Kristian Dennis with Jim O'Brien.

But before the Magpies had chance to settle, Pools find themselves ahead after McDonnell misjudged a cross from Nicky Featherstone.

Richard Brindley fired just wide from distance in response, but the game was taken away from Notts who gifted Featherstone his second of the game when his free-kick went straight in.

Notts tried to find a way back into the game, but Killip was rarely tested on a disappointing afternoon.
