Two fishermen rescued off the coast of Donegal after their boat sinks

Two fishermen were rescued off the coast of Donegal this morning after their boat sank.

Their boat, a 36-foot vessel named the Silver Rose, got into difficulty on the rocks near Tory Island at around 6am on Monday.

The two crew members on board issued a mayday call and the Malin Head Coast Guard responded, tasking the Coast Guard Rescue 118 helicopter and the Arranmore RNLI Lifeboat to the rescue mission.

Another fishing boat that was in the vicinity also responded to the distress signal and was first to arrive at the scene.

It found the two crew members in a life raft, around 1.5 miles from where their boat sank.

The two men were brought safely back to shore on Tory Island and did not require any further medical attention.

Speaking to RTE News, Arranmore RNLI lifeboat spokesperson Nora Flanagan said the news of the rescue was a "great outcome".

She said: "Arranmore Lifeboat was called out at 6.15am this morning to a boat that got into difficulty on the rocks at Tory Island with two people on board.

"The two people on board got into their life rafts and were subsequently picked up by a fishing boat, which was in the area at the time, and the lifeboat was actually stood down on hearing that the men had been rescued and returned to the station at Arranmore.

"So thankfully it's a great outcome that people were rescued and are safe and well. It's really good news and we're so pleased to hear that."
