Two cars crash into same ditch one day apart as standing water forces motors off Scots road

Two drivers had a lucky escape this week after crashing their cars into the same ditch on a busy Scots road - less than 24 hours apart.

A blue Porshe had to be recovered after skidding off-road road and into the trees on the A8, Greenock Road during the heavy rain downpours at around 7am on Monday. The following morning a red Ford Focus veered off the Inverclyde road at the exact same spot.

Both vehicles were trapped in a ditch and had to be recovered. Pictures from the scene show the bashed-up cars being pulled from the bushes at the side of the dual carriageway.

The drivers appear to have been uninjured, however, their cars were severely damaged in the accidents. Robert McKenzie, the recovery driver from Auto-Tec Scotland who was called to collect both vehicles after the crashes, warned drivers to approach this spot with caution.

He said: "Two cars is two days recovered from the same ditch. Standing water forced two vehicles off the road only a day apart at exactly the same spot. Eastbound heading towards Langbank just before the railway bridge opposite Finlaystone Estate entrance.

"We were on hand with our hiab to recover both vehicles. Not an easy recovery but we have the tools for the Job! Please be careful as the hazard still exists and could easily catch you out! Thankfully no one was seriously hurt on these occasions."

Several other driver said the road is known for it's hazardous continues in the bad weather. Commenting on Auto-Tec Scotland's Facebook post about the incident, one man said: "If you drive that road everyone knows how bad it is in the rain."

Another added: "Road has been resurfaced recently, did they get the camber right? Standing water is very noticeable at the lay-by just before you reach this stretch."

Police Scotland confirmed they were called to an accident on this road on Monday morning.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We were called to a report of a crash on Greenock Road near to Langbank around 7am on Monday, August 22. One car involved in road crash and Ambulance not required."

A Traffic Scotland spokesperson said: “Police investigations into these accidents are on-going and it would be inappropriate to comment further at this time. A part of standard policy Transport Scotland officials will meet with Police Scotland and the road operating company to obtain more detailed information on the accidents.”
