Two men have been arrested after a laser pen was shone at a police helicopter which was to find a missing person.

Cleveland Police arrested the men, aged 44 and 17, on suspicion of recklessly or negligently acting in a manner likely to endanger aircraft or person in an aircraft following the incident on Monday evening in County Durham.

The force said during the arrest, it was reported that a 17-year-old kicked and pushed an officer in the chest and he was also arrested on suspicion of assault by beating an emergency worker.

Temporary Detective Chief Inspector Jon Tapper, of Cleveland Police, said: "Under no circumstances should police officers be assaulted whilst on duty and we will not tolerate this type of behaviour.

"Officers were sent to arrest the males in connection with a serious incident where colleagues had reportedly been putting at risk when assisting the Force with finding a vulnerable person.

"Our officers and colleagues work tirelessly on a daily basis to keep members of the public safe and prevent people from harm. Their safety and wellbeing should not be jeopardised when carrying out their duties."

Both of the arrested men remain in custody while enquiries continue, the force added on Tuesday.
