Twitter to make major policy change after poll votes for Elon Musk to step down

Twitter is set to make a major policy change relating to who can vote on policy related polls. It comes after users voted that owner Elon Musk should step down in a poll that the Tesla CEO had shared.

Mr Musk is yet to confirm whether he will abide by the result as promised, but it looks unlikely after recent exchanges regarding the vote.

Shortly after putting the poll to the public, Musk symbolically tweeted: "As the saying goes, be careful what you wish, as you might get it".

His position has been controversial from the outset, with controversial decisions such as a the loosening of Twitter's content moderation approach, allowing previously banned users to return and banning users from tweeting links to other social media sites has prompted some online safety groups to accuse the billionaire of allowing hate, abuse and misinformation to circulate on the platform because of his free speech principles.

One user, Kim Dotcom (@KimDotcom), argued that conducting such a poll was "unwise", with bots able to vote freely and potentially falsely pad the result.

Another user, Unfiltered Boss (@Unfilteredboss1), commented that only Twitter Blue subscribers, an initiative Musk himself introduced, should be able to vote policy related polls as they "have skin in the game."

Twitter Blue subscribers currently pay $8 a month for a 'verified' tick. In response to the suggestion, Musk said yesterday (19 December) that such an alteration would be made.

His most recent statement on the developments was that were he to step down, in his opinion there would be no-one available to take over that would be capable of: "keeping Twitter alive".

While it remains unclear who could replace Mr Musk if he does step down, several commentators have noted that the billionaire would still have the final say on major decisions as Twitter’s owner. Industry expert Paolo Pescatore of PP Foresight said Twitter users should “expect the unexpected” when it comes to the future direction and leadership of the firm.

American rapper Snoop Dogg has put himself forward to take over from Mr Musk, starting his own Twitter poll asking if he should run the company, with 81% of those taking part so far saying he should, with more than 1.8 million votes cast by Monday afternoon.
