Robert Pattinson has worn a lot of hats over the years. Tragic YA darling, tortured vampire, Batman… and now, he might be adding musician to that list in a whole new way.
A recent string of listings on ASCAP (the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers) register seven new original songs performed by Pattinson. The songs, which are co-written by Pattinson and Marcus Foster, are titled “Bent Out That Midnight Day,” “Best Friend,” “Fascinate,” “Fell Off,” “Green Light,” “Waiting on Me,” and “Witness (You See Me).” While these listings are far from any sort of official announcement, many have taken them to mean that Pattinson could be releasing an album or EP of music in the near future.
Real ones know that this is far from the first time that Pattinson, who has been playing piano and guitar since the age of four, has officially released a song. He has contributed to the soundtracks for a number of his movies, beginning with two tracks on the now-iconic Twilight soundtrack, “Never Think” and “Let Me Sign.” The latter was co-written by Foster, which gives a bit of an inkling of what these new songs might sound like. Since then, he has also contributed songs to the soundtracks for How to Be, Damsel, and High Life.
“That’s what I was scared about, it looks like I’m trying to get a music career out of it or something,” Pattinson said of his involvement with the Twilight soundtrack to The Los Angeles Times back in 2008. “I’ve never really recorded anything — I just played in pubs and stuff –- and I really didn’t want it to look like I was trying to cash in. I hope it doesn’t come across as that. I’m not going to be doing any music videos or anything. Music is my backup plan if acting fails. I don’t want to put all my eggs in one basket.”
You know what? Hell yeah.
It’s understandable that that was Pattinson’s sentiment back before the debut of Twilight, as that was also amid the heyday of teen actors trying to become multi-hyphenates and branch out into music. But now, the fact that Pattinson possibly feels creatively compelled to release a whole new album is intriguing.
It’s intriguing given how many other projects he has going on, between the release of Mickey 17 and Die My Love this year, and the upcoming filming of mega-blockbusters Dune: Messiah and The Batman Part II. If Pattinson does officially release music, he will be the first onscreen Batman to do so in quite a while. Adam West previously released a single, titled “Miranda”, in 1966, complete with his Batman on the album art. And Val Kilmer had 2007’s Sessions with Mick, a demo album that he sold on his MySpace page.
Pattinson’s years-long relationship with actress and singer Suki Waterhouse, which led to the birth of their first child in March of 2024, could also add an interesting emotional layer to the songs he might be releasing. And honestly, I’m just curious to see what Pattinson felt creatively compelled to say in these songs, after his previous bouts of public creativity have led to him becoming an amateur furniture designer and a pasta innovator. Whatever he feels like singing about, I’m excited to hear it.
