Twelve schools in West Lothian report Covid-19 outbreaks in the last week

A further 12 West Lothian schools reported Covid-19 outbreaks in the past week.

The news comes as the county moves into Level Four lockdown but crucially is a significant drop on the number of schools reported last week.

The council say only a small number of pupils were affected and all parents have been informed with a letter from the Scottish Government.

The high schools returning positive tests in the week ending November 20 were: Broxburn Academy, St Kentigern’s Academy in Blackburn and Whitburn Academy.

The following primary schools: Boghall Primary School in Bathgate, Croftmalloch Primary in Whitburn, East Calder Primary School, Eastertoun Primary in Armadale, Our Lady of Lourdes in Blackburn and St Anthony’s Primary School in Armadale.

And outbreaks were also reported at Bathgate Early Years Centre, Cedarbank School in Livingston and Ogilvie School Campus in Livingston

A West Lothian Council spokesperson said: “Whilst a number of schools have been impacted by Covid-19 in the last week, this number is reducing and still only involves a small percentage of pupils.

“The majority of pupils and staff contracting Covid-19 is through community transmission out with school.

“We would appeal to all West Lothian parents/carers and pupils to help us reducing the spread of Covid-19. When a child attends schools with Covid-19 symptoms, it often means that a number of their classmates have to isolate as a result.

“Children should attend school as normal, unless one of the reason below apply: they are showing symptoms of covid-19 - a new, continuous cough; fever; or loss of, or change in, sense of smell or taste; someone in their household has the above symptoms; they are waiting for the results of a covid-19 test; they have been asked to isolate by Test and Protect; or they have returned to the UK from any country out with the exempt list in the last 14 days.

“Anyone who need specific advice on their situation concerning Covid-19 and attending school should call the NHS on 111. They can also speak to their school to discuss their situation in confidence.”

The latest Public Health Scotland data as of November 22 shows West Lothian had 19 new Covid-19 cases returned, 356 over a seven day period and 3186 since records began in March.

This works out at 194 positive cases per 100,000, much higher then the national average of 134.
