Best TV shows on TV tonight

The Bear season 2, Disney Plus (box set)

Jeremy Allen White won a Golden Globe for his portrayal of troubled yet brilliant chef Carmen ‘Carmy’ Berzatto last year, and Disney Plus are serving up a second serving of the acclaimed drama from today.

After saving their off-beat Chicago sandwich shop following his brother’s suicide, Carmy and his team are hoping to revamp and relaunch the restaurant this year, but soon find true excellence requires real sacrifice. Overflowing with stress-inducing drama, mouth-watering food, and some deeply tender moments, it’s a wonderfully shot examination of grief, friendship and hope that shows the first season was no flash in the pan.

Joanna Lumley's Spice Trail Adventure, 9 pm, ITV1

In episode three, explorer Joanna navigates the bone-rattling roads of the island of Madagascar in search of vanilla, which she learns is one of the most expensive spices on Earth because each vanilla orchid has to be pollinated by hand! As well as having a go herself at the delicate task of pollinating a vanilla flower, the Ab Fab star meets vanilla hustlers in Madagascar’s busy markets and finds out how cacao seeds are processed into some of the best chocolate in the world. It’s also a particular delight to hear Joanna speaking fluent French, one of the official languages of the majestic African island country. ★★★★ HD

The Great British Sewing Bee 2023, 9 pm, BBC One

It’s semi-final time and the four remaining contestants are pulling out all the stops to book themselves a place in the final. First up it’s ‘utilitarian clothing’, so judges Patrick Grant and Esme Young have tasked them with making a trench coat and fitted boiler suits. Then, for the Transformation Challenge, the stitchers must make a garment from old cleaning products, including cloths, rubber gloves and mop heads! ‘I got all the leftover scourers. I’ll never need to buy one again,’ jokes presenter Sara Pascoe.

Rob & Romesh vs Magic in Vegas, 9 pm, Sky Max/Showcase/NOW

We’ve seen them do drag, take to the stage and even take free kicks with the England team, but now pals Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan are back for a fifth series of their have-a-go show. Tonight, they’re on a mission to learn magic as they travel to Sin City to perform the encore at legendary magicians Penn & Teller’s show. But things don’t get off to a great start when Rob spectacularly fails to grasp the art of sleight of hand and Romesh misses his cue with some street magic on the Las Vegas Strip. So can they get their act together for the big show?

The Replacement, Channel 4

Originally shown on BBC1 in 2017, here’s another chance to see this three-part psychological thriller on demand starring Vicky McClure and Morven Christie. Ellen (Christie) is preparing for her maternity leave from her architectural practice when she finds the perfect replacement in mum-of-one Paula (McClure). But when Paula comes in to job-shadow, Ellen begins to see her as a friend-stealing manipulator.

Are her own insecurities to blame or is Paula trying to take over Ellen’s life, not just her job? With an air of Single White Female about it, this is a spine-tingling take on office politics, with a good amount of ambiguity as you’re never quite sure whose side you’re on.

Best film on TV tonight

Little Miss Sunshine, Disney Plus

There is no better way to remember actor Alan Arkin, who passed away last month, aged 89, than his Oscar-winning performance in this charmingly cynical road-movie comedy. He plays a drug-using but doting grumpy old man, who encourages his granddaughter to believe in herself as she enters a beauty pageant. Arkin was also a director, but it is for such comic roles he remains best known, including his breakthrough in war satire Catch-22 (Paramount Plus) and his recent stint as an acting agent in The Kominsky Method (Netflix).
