Turkish Court: Wikipedia Ban Violation of Freedom of Expression

A Constitutional Court in Turkey ruled that the authorities’ ban on online encyclopedia Wikipedia was a violation of freedom of expression.

The ruling was released in the Official Gazette Wednesday, which should pave the way for the two-year block to be lifted.

The ban was imposed in April 2017 due to entries that accused Turkey of having links to terrorist organizations.

Wikimedia Foundation, the nonprofit organization that hosts Wikipedia, had applied to Turkey’s highest court to challenge the block.
