The Democratic Modernist Pole Party, part of the opposition Popular Front in Tunisia, called to resolve the internal political rivalry between two of the candidates for the presidential elections, scheduled for November 10.
Head of the Pole Riadh Ben Fadhel said that this proposal falls within the framework of new democratic practices and is an attempt to steer the country clear of rivalry and divisions.
The Popular Front coalition is required, more than ever, to include new political practices worthy of Tunisia's revolution, he said.
Despite pressure from the head of Democratic Patriots’ Unified Party Mongi Rahoui, against Labor Party chief Hamma al-Hammami, the Modernist Pole considered having two competing candidates for the upcoming presidential elections as a democratic phenomenon.
Meanwhile, Popular Front member Ammar Amroussia stated that there would be consensus on a single candidate.
He criticized Rahoui’s quick candidacy announcement in spite of what was agreed between the leaders of the coalition parties, which was refraining from announcing the names of candidates for the 2019 presidential elections in the media or through political statements.
Leftist leaders believe that Hammami, who was one of the most prominent opponents of the regime of former President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali, has the priority to run in the polls.
The Popular Front is expected to announce its presidential candidate after resolving differences on three nominations - Hammami, Rahoui and head of People's Movement Zuhair al-Mghzawi.
According to its bylaws, the Front is expected to reach consensus on the candidate.
