PALM BEACH, Fla. -- U.S. President Donald Trump said Wednesday he would cancel a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, planned to be held by early June, if he thinks it will not be "fruitful."
During a joint press conference with Prime Minister Shinzo Abe in Florida following their talks, Trump said he would clarify Kim's true intentions during prior negotiations and make thorough preparations for the summit. "If we don't think it's going to be successful, we won't have it," the president said.
He also indicated his confidence in realizing the denuclearization of North Korea.
Trump expressed a strong commitment to making the U.S.-North Korea summit successful, saying, "We will be doing everything possible to make it a worldwide success."
Concerns have been expressed that the United States might allow North Korea to get control of the summit if Trump attends it unprepared. The president therefore sent U.S. secretary of state nominee and CIA Director Mike Pompeo to North Korea to meet with Kim, to show he is holding preparatory negotiations with the country.
Trump also strongly indicated that there has been progress in negotiations with North Korea over the release of three U.S. citizens detained in the country.
