With friends like this, Rudy Giuliani may not need prosecutors or Democrats to tear him down.
President Donald Trump praised the ex-mayor as "the greatest" and a "legendary 'crime fighter'" in a tweet Saturday as the Ukraine scandal continued to plague both men.
"He is also a great guy and wonderful lawyer," Trump added in a post on Twitter, which Giuliani retweeted. "Such a one sided Witch Hunt going on in USA. Deep State. Shameful!"
But along with the chummy bravado, there was the second hint in as many days that Trump may be laying the groundwork to toss his personal lawyer under the bus soon.
"He's may seem a little rough around the edges sometimes," Trump conceded in the same tweet.
Just 24 hours earlier, Trump claimed he wasn't sure if Giuliani was still his lawyer.
"You'll have to ask Rudy," the president said.
Trump used the same language in response to questions about Michael Cohen's role in paying hush money to Stormy Daniels and another pin-up girl.
Weeks later, Cohen was on the outs with Trump and the president sought to make his longtime loyal fixer a scapegoat for any number of alleged misdeeds.
