Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Kumar Deb on Tuesday apologised for saying the people of Punjab and Haryana were physically strong but low on intellect.
“It was not my intention to hurt any community. I am proud of both Punjabi and Jat communities. I have spent a lot of time among them myself,” Mr Deb wrote on Twitter and sought forgiveness for hurting sentiments.
He said he had merely touched upon the perception of “some people” while speaking at an event organised at the Agartala Press Club on July 19.
The Chief Minister had ended his speech by describing the traits of certain communities.

“Bengalis are known for their intelligence and no one can challenge them. People of Punjab, who we call Sardar or Punjabi, are very strong but are less brainy. People can win them over by love, not through trial of strength,” he had said.
“And what do people usually say about Jats living in Haryana? They have less intelligence but they are very strong. If someone challenges a Jat person, he would bring out a gun from his house,” Mr Deb said in a bid to lighten the atmosphere.
The comments had sparked widespread criticisms, with the Congress’ chief spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala calling for action against Mr Deb for insulting the two communities.
The Tripura BJP, however, said the Chief Minister’s views were “misrepresented” by the media.
Mr Deb has been known for his controversial comments since assuming office in March 2018 including remarks that ancient Indians used the Internet and artificial satellites and that civil engineers made better civil service officers.
