The Tripoli-based Government of National Accord held talks on Thursday on the latest local developments, specifically the security in southern Libya.
The meeting, headed by GNA chief Fayez al-Sarraj, stressed the importance of security in the South and providing all support for the security agencies.
Meanwhile, GNA Interior Minister Fathi Bashaagha stated that his ministry requires direct international support to train its security forces.
He made his remarks after holding talks with British Charge d’Affaires in Libya Angus Mckee on Wednesday.
He added that London has a prominent role to play through supporting the GNA and providing logistic and security support.
Bashaagha had recently complained of the “major financial and administrative corruption” plaguing his ministry, adding that the security forces and police were not sufficiently armed and equipped.
He also demanded that the arms embargo against Libya be lifted. He made his remarks in wake of the ISIS attack against the Foreign Ministry building in Tripoli in December.
On Thursday, he met with Deputy Special Representative of the United Nations in Libya Stephanie Williams on international support for the implementation of the security plan for the Greater Tripoli area.
Williams had discussed this issue on Wednesday with head of the High Council of State Khaled al-Mishri. They also tackled efforts to restore stability in the South.
Separately, Libyan National Army (LNA) spokesman Ahmed al-Mismari announced that the army was seeking to impose more stability and security throughout the country.
He stated that the LNA was “completely” aware of the activity of terrorist organizations, which he warned were plotting to stage reprisal attacks in wake of their recent defeats.
The LNA is seeking to restore security to allow foreign companies to resume their operations in Libya’s oil and gas sector, he said.
The army not only seeks to reach Tobruk and Derna in the East, but it wants to liberate all territories, Mismari said.
