TripAdvisor stops reviews on hole in the wall outside Ilkeston Natwest bank

Reviews for a hole in a wall outside a bank have been suspended by TripAdvisor after it became a town's fourth highest rated attraction.

Glowing spoof write-ups online has led to notoriety for a hole in a wall jutting outside the NatWest Bank in Bath Street, Ilkeston.

This has led to the hole in the wall is being rated on the travel website as a bigger tourist attraction than the Bennerley Viaduct.

One visitor wrote on TripAdvisor: "I have spent hours admiring the architectural beauty of the NatWest hole. I could easily compare to the majestic wonder of Stonehenge or even the Pyramids.

"Quite how the workers of the 90s managed to construct such a work of this magnitude is beyond imagination. Just think, all they had back in those days were angle grinders, cement, wheelbarrows and a team of (at the most 100 workers). Simply amazing!"

Another wrote: "Having been fortunate to travel to many destinations across the globe, this has to be one of the best examples of a circular hole I’ve seen. All-round, I’d recommend a visit, just be careful of the one-way streets or you’ll be going around in circles".

Following media coverage on new reviews on the hole, TripAdvisor said it has since stopped publishing new reviews as they "do not describe a first-hand experience".

A message from TripAdvisor on its website listing said: "Due to a recent event that has attracted media attention and has caused an influx of review submissions that do not describe a first-hand experience, we have temporarily suspended publishing new reviews for this listing.

"If you’ve had a firsthand experience at this property, please check back soon - we’re looking forward to receiving your review."
