Trinidad and Tobago vs Ghana LIVE: Unity Cup result, latest updates and reaction as Black Stars claim third

Trinidad and Tobago vs Ghana LIVE

The Black Stars are back in action this afternoon in Brentford as they take on the Soca Warriors in the Unity Cup third-place play-off. The international football tournament has returned for the first time in over 20 years, with the Gtech Community Stadium playing host to two thrilling semi-finals earlier this week.

Trinidad and Tobago went down to Jamaica in Tuesday’s first semi-final, going down 3-2 in agonising fashion as Richard King scored a 94th-minute penalty. Trinidad had earlier fought back from two goals down to draw level, thanks to a strike from Isiah Leacock and Kevin Molino, and now face Ghana to avoid the wooden spoon.

Brandon Thomas-Asante’s first international goal could not prevent Ghana from going down 2-1 to Nigeria on Wednesday night. Abu Francis had a golden chance to equalise in injury tim, but was denied by a superb save from Stanley Nwabali. Who will come out on top today ahead of this evening’s final? Match report

15:10 , Alex Young

Ghana comfortably saw off Trinidad and Tobago 4-0 on Saturday to secure third place in the 2025 Unity Cup, writes Alex Dakers.

A relatively inexperienced Black Stars squad was inspired by a stellar performance from captain Jordan Ayew, who opened the scoring mere minutes into the afternoon’s proceedings with a curling effort from outside the box.

The Leicester City forward then delivered the corner which was headed home by defender Razak Simpson six minutes later, before laying the ball off for Mohammed Fuseini to rifle in a third of the match before half-time.

Ayew, who had several other chances throughout his hour-long appearance, was in the area again just prior to his second-half withdrawal but this time wasn’t needed as Lawrence Agyekum’s effort from a tight angle squeezed through the legs of Jabari St Hillaire, taking a deflection off the Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper on its way into the net.

FULL-TIME

14:22 , Alex Dakers

Ghana 4-0 Trinidad and Tobago

And that is that!

Little contest in the end as Ghana comfortably see off Trinidad and Tobago to pick up bronze medals in this 2025 Unity Cup.

Ghana 4-0 Trinidad and Tobago

14:16 , Alex Dakers

85min: A few moments later, Ghana are on the attack again.

Yirenkyi is the creator once more but Brandon Thomas-Asante can’t quite beat Jabari St Hillaire, who is soon called into action again to collect a through ball.

And then St Hillaire makes another save, this time from Christopher Bonsu-Baah. The 20-year-old Ghanaian winger, who plays for Belgian side Genk at club level, has been excellent today and has come close to a first senior international goal on several occasions but headed straight at the goalkeeper there.

Ghana 4-0 Trinidad and Tobago

14:15 , Alex Dakers

81min: A chance for Ghana to make it five, but Christopher Bonsu-Baah mishits the ball in front of goal after a cutback from Caleb Yirenkyi.

Ghana 4-0 Trinidad and Tobago

14:13 , Alex Dakers

80min: Then there’s a yellow for Nathan Powder as well, the third substitute to be booked.

Trinidad and Tobago understandably frustrated at this point on what has been a disappointing afternoon.

Ghana 4-0 Trinidad and Tobago

14:11 , Alex Dakers

78min: A yellow card for Andre Raymond now for a foul near the touchline.

Brandon Thomas-Asante then gets his head onto the indirect free-kick, but can’t quite put his effort on target and the ball loops over the goal.

Ghana 4-0 Trinidad and Tobago

14:07 , Alex Dakers

75min: And now a change for Trinidad and Tobago, with Jesse Williams swapped out for PSV Eindhoven youngster Dantaye Gilbert.

Ghana 4-0 Trinidad and Tobago

14:03 , Alex Dakers

71min: Two more substitutions for Ghana whilst Trinidad and Tobago’s Sheldon Bateau receives treatment on the pitch.

The first sees Francis Abu comes off, replaced in the middle of the park by Abdul Samed Salis.

Coventry City striker Brandon Thomas-Asante, who scored off the bench against Nigeria in midweek, then comes on to replace today’s third goal-scorer Mohammed Fuseini.

Ghana 4-0 Trinidad and Tobago

14:00 , Alex Dakers

68min: Another corner for Ghana but no Jordan Ayew to deliver this one, which means debutant Abdul Aziz Issah steps up.

It comes to nothing, though.

Black Stars boss Otto Addo is preparing to make a few more changes.

Ghana 4-0 Trinidad and Tobago

13:58 , Alex Dakers

66min: Things have quietened down again a bit since those changes, with little except a few fouls to report on.

The last of those sees Ghanaian teenager Caleb Yirenkyi receive a verbal caution from referee Sam Barrot.

No luck for Trinidad and Tobago from the resulting deep free-kick.

Ghana 4-0 Trinidad and Tobago

13:52 , Alex Dakers

59min: And that’s Agyekum’s final action, as he’s replaced by Abdul Aziz Issah in a triple Ghanaian substitution.

Also making way is Ibrahima Sulemana, the midfielder being replaced by Majeed Ashimeru.

And the other departure at this stage is Jordan Ayew, with Juventus youngster Felix Afena-Gyan coming on for the final 30 minutes.

A super afternoon for Ayew, who was waiting to prod home that last goal if it needed help on the way in. A goal and two assists for the Black Stars captain, who hands the armband to Gideon Mensah on his way off.

GOAL! Ghana 4-0 Trinidad and Tobago

13:49 , Alex Dakers

57min: Lawrence Agyekum makes it four!

This has been a day Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Jabari St Hillaire will hope to forget quickly, and that’s just made it worse.

Agyekum cuts in from the wing and lets loose from a tight angle, with the ball clipping St Hillaire’s legs on its way through them and into the back of the net.

They were nearly comeback kings in the Unity Cup semi-finals, but this is surely out of reach for the Soca Warriors now with half an hour left.

Ghana 3-0 Trinidad and Tobago

13:46 , Alex Dakers

55min: Another collision there, which results in a yellow card for Trinidad and Tobago substitute John-Paul Rochford.

Ghana 3-0 Trinidad and Tobago

13:44 , Alex Dakers

51min: A quieter start to the second half than the first, which will suit Ghana much more than Trinidad and Tobago with this score line.

Lawrence Agyekum is offside when he chases a ball towards the goal, and the Ghanaian collides with Soca Warriors goalkeeper Jabari St Hillaire, who gets there first.

Both men are seen to on the pitch but appear fine to continue.

Ghana 3-0 Trinidad and Tobago

13:38 , Alex Dakers

46min: Dwight Yorke has made a quadruple change for Trinidad and Tobago at the start of this second half.

Shervohnez Hamilton, Isaiah Lee, Reon Moore and Kristian Lee-Him look to have been the players withdrawn, with Andre Raymond, Noah Powder, Brent Sam and John-Paul Rochford coming on.

Second half kick-off

13:36 , Alex Dakers

We’re back underway in west London.

HALF-TIME

13:23 , Alex Dakers

Ghana 3-0 Trinidad and Tobago

And that brings to a close an exhilarating first half at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium.

Trinidad and Tobago have had a few chances, including one which came back off the post, but it’s really been all about Ghana so far in this Unity Cup bronze medal match.

Leicester City’s Jordan Ayew, the Black Stars’ captain, opened the scoring before delivering the ball for both Razak Simpson’s second and Mohammed Fuseini’s third.

Ghana 3-0 Trinidad and Tobago

13:20 , Alex Dakers

45min: Off the bar!

Christopher Bonsu-Baah beats the Trinidad and Tobago defence, darts into the box and plays the ball across goal for Mohammed Fuseini, who clatters his close-range effort off the frame of the goal.

It’s flagged for offside on Fuseini, though.

GOAL! Ghana 3-0 Trinidad and Tobago

13:16 , Alex Dakers

41min: Ghana take the ball from back to front in mere moments, playing it out wide to 19-year-old Caleb Yirenkyi - who has been excellent so far - before Jordan Ayew lays off to Mohammed Fuseini.

On his full debut, the Black Stars’ No. 17 makes no mistake with the finish for his first senior international goal and it’s 3-0 as we approach half-time.

Ghana 2-0 Trinidad and Tobago

13:14 , Alex Dakers

39min: Trinidad and Tobago forward Isaiah Lee takes a bit of a knock and hits the turf.

He limps away for a second but looks to have escaped any serious harm.

Ghana 2-0 Trinidad and Tobago

13:10 , Alex Dakers

36min: Some neat football there from Ghana earned another corner moments ago, but the Black Stars can’t get a clean shot away after it.

Trinidad and Tobago win the ball back and work their way into Ghana’s half, but a mazy run into the box ultimately comes to nothing.

Ghana 2-0 Trinidad and Tobago

13:05 , Alex Dakers

31min:Trinidad and Tobago goalkeeper Jabari St Hillaire is receiving treatment to his calf, and head coach Dwight Yorke uses the opportunity to dispense a much-needed team talk to the rest of his XI.

St Hillaire is back on his feet a few minutes later and the outfield players are back on the pitch with him.

Yorke doesn’t look best pleased with this performance so far, but there’s still a long way to go - and his side’s comeback against Jamaica didn’t happen until the second half on Tuesday.

Ghana 2-0 Trinidad and Tobago

13:00 , Alex Dakers

25min: They very nearly do!

The free-kick itself doesn’t beat the wall but the ball rebounds to Duane Muckette, who smashes his a well-hit effort off the post.

Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Zigi could do nothing but watch with relief as that clattered against the woodwork and back out to be cleared away.

Trinidad and Tobago reminding Ghana they’re still very much in this match, having come back from two goals down against Jamaica earlier this week.

Ghana 2-0 Trinidad and Tobago

12:58 , Alex Dakers

24min: A free-kick for Trinidad and Tobago in a dangerous position on the edge of the box here...

Can the Soca Warriors pull one back? They scored following a free-kick against Jamaica on Tuesday.

Ghana 2-0 Trinidad and Tobago

12:56 , Alex Dakers

21min: Christopher Bonsu-Baah sends another cross into the box which Jordan Ayew gets his head to but the Ghana captain can’t steer it towards the goal this time, and the ball bounces out of play.

Ghana 2-0 Trinidad and Tobago

12:53 , Alex Dakers

19min: Their team are down two goals to nil in the opening minutes of this Unity Cup bronze medal match, but some Trinidad and Tobago supporters still seem to be enjoying themselves!

Whistles, horns and some lovely steelpan music rings out around the Gtech Community Stadium.

Ghana 2-0 Trinidad and Tobago

12:50 , Alex Dakers

15min: Ghana’s Ibrahim Sulemana was down and received some on-pitch treatment following a tackle, but is fine to continue.

GOAL! Ghana 2-0 Trinidad and Tobago

12:46 , Alex Dakers

11min: Two already for Ghana, and this is getting ugly for Trinidad and Tobago.

Another Jordan Ayew corner finds its mark and this time Razak Simpson rises high to head it home.

That had followed a spell of possession by Trinidad and Tobago in the Ghanaian half, which was brought to an end by a Christopher Bonsu-Baah chance on the break leading to the corner.

GOAL! Ghana 1-0 Trinidad and Tobago

12:39 , Alex Dakers

5min: And there’s the opener!

From who else but Jordan Ayew, the man that has been so central to Ghana’s threat in these opening minutes.

The Leicester City forward is given way too much time and lashes in a lovely curling strike from the edge of the area.

Ghana 0-0 Trinidad and Tobago

12:38 , Alex Dakers

4 min: A lovely, teasing cross very nearly finds Jordan Ayew in the box.

Ghana certainly with the stronger start here.

Ghana 0-0 Trinidad and Tobago

12:36 , Alex Dakers

2 min: The first corner of the match is won by Ghana and taken by Jordan Ayew.

A promising delivery but it’s headed out of play for a goalkick.

We’re still waiting for official word on Trinidad and Tobago’s line-up.

With kick-off a little over five minutes away, all will be revealed either way soon!

Ghana XI: Ayew leads the line, six changes

12:12 , Alex Dakers

Ghana captain Jordan Ayew leads the Black Stars this afternoon as manager Otto Addo makes six changes to the starting line-up that lost to Nigeria on Wednesday.

Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare drops to the bench with Lawrence Ati-Zigi favoured, while Caleb Yirenkyi and Abu Francis impressed as substitutes and have earned starting berths for this bronze medal match.

The same goes for Lawrence Agyekum, with Mohammed Fuseini Gadafi and Ibrahima Sulemana the other newcomers to the XI.

It means there’s no start for Coventry City striker Brandon Thomas-Asante despite his goal off the bench against Nigeria, while Juventus Next Gen forward Felix Afena-Gyan joined up with the squad ahead of this match but must settle for a place among the subs.

Ghana team in full

12:00 , Alex Dakers

Ghana XI: Ati-Zigi, Mensah, Ambrosius, Yirenkyi, Francis, Simpson, Sulemana, Agyekum, Bonsu Baah, Ayew, Fuseini

Subs: Asare, Anang, Annan, Kamaradini, Essel, Salis, Ashimeru, Thomas-Asante, Afena-Gyan, Opoku, Issah

CONFIRMED GHANA XI

11:54 , Alex Dakers

Lining up for Ghana this afternoon is the following side:

Soca Warriors 'building towards something bigger' - Yorke

11:45 , Alex Dakers

Trinidad and Tobago will aim to finish their Unity Cup trip on a high but are ultimately focused on “building towards something bigger” - the World Cup.

Speaking ahead of today’s match, Soca Warriors head coach and former star player Dwight Yorke said: "We still have this important game coming up against Ghana. We know it's not the one we wanted to be playing when we came here; we wanted to get to the final, but it was not to be.

“Still, this is an important game because we are building toward something bigger. We know we have the World Cup qualifiers ahead of us, so we want to finish on a high here so we are refocused and ready for the challenge against a good Ghanaian team.”

Reflecting on the lessons learned from his side’s loss to Jamaica on Tuesday, the ex-Manchester United striker continued: "We want to bring a winning mentality to the team, so it would be good to bounce back because that's what good teams do.

“I felt that we gave Jamaica a head start and had to play catch-up, so I would love to see my team being a bit more proactive, I am looking for that positive reaction. I would rather get ahead than chase teams down. That's something we are improving on, but I would take away a lot of belief if that were to happen.”

Ghana 'have the quality' to win

11:37 , Alex Dakers

Ghana head coach Otto Addo is confident his side have enough quality to end their 2025 Unity Cup campaign with a victory today.

Speaking ahead of the match, he said: “We showed already a good reaction [vs Nigeria], surely we would want to continue in the second half.

"We really want to finish this tournament with a win, and I think we have the quality for that and we just have to show that on the pitch from the beginning and not just from the second half.”

Ghana vs Trinidad and Tobago prediction

11:25 , Alex Dakers

There were plenty of goals in each of these two sides’ Unity Cup semi-finals. Both fans and neutrals will be hoping for more of the same in today’s bronze medal match, and with any luck that’s what we’ll get.

Despite their youthful squad, Ghana’s superior international pedigree, led by the likes of captain Jordan Ayew, might be enough to get them over the line.

But Trinidad and Tobago have had an extra day of rest and will surely be cautious not to repeat the mistakes that led to Jamaica’s two penalties, so this could end up a close contest.

Ghana to win, 2-1.

Trinidad and Tobago team news

11:07 , Alex Dakers

Trinidad and Tobago, managed by former Manchester United frontman Dwight Yorke, features a few players plying their trade in the UK including Stevenage midfielder Daniel Phillips and St Johnstone defender Andre Raymond.

Joevin Jones is an experienced member of the Soca Warriors’ backline, while teenaged Crystal Palace academy player Rio Cardines impressed in his side’s loss to Jamaica on what was his first senior international appearance.

The team’s captain, winger Kevin Molino, scored Trinidad and Tobago’s second goal in that match after debutant Isaiah Leacock’s opener.

Also involved against the Reggae Boyz were the likes of Jamal Jack, Alvin Jones, Dantaye Gilbert and John-Paul Rochford, with Marvin Phillip between the sticks. Second-half substitute Justin Garcia won’t have done himself any favours in his hopes for a starting spot today, though, having given away the decisive late penalty on Tuesday.

Ghana team news

10:49 , Alex Dakers

Ghana boss Otto Addo has a relatively inexperienced squad at his disposal, with the Black Stars missing the likes of Mohammed Kudus, Antoine Semenyo and Thomas Partey.

Leicester City’s Jordan Ayew was involved against Nigeria, while 20-year-old Genk forward Christopher Bonsu Baah impressed on his debut.

Kwame Opoku, the other starting member of Ghana’s frontline in that match, made way for substitute Brandon Thomas-Asante of Coventry City to notch his first international goal, while fellow subs Caleb Yirenkyi - another of several debutants - and Abu Francis also came close to scoring and may be pushing for a start today.

Goalkeeper Benjamin Asare, who hails from Hearts of Oak of the Ghana Premier League, conceded twice against the Super Eagles yesterday but made a few fine saves to keep his side in the match until the final whistle.

Elsewhere in Ghana’s XI on Wednesday, Gideon Mensah and Kamaradini Mamudu were deployed as wingbacks with Abdul Samed Salis and Majeed Ashimeru in midfield.

And the side have reportedly been boosted ahead of today’s match by the arrival of Juventus Next Gen forward Felix Afena-Gyan, who will provide Addo with further attacking options.
