Tributes to dad-of-two who died after falling from bridge over East Lancs Road

Tributes have been paid to a 'true gentleman' and dad-of-two who died after falling from a bridge over the East Lancs Road.

Police were called to reports that a man had fallen from a footbridge on to the road, near St Helens, at about 10.25am on Monday.

Lee Leyland, 40, died at the scene.

His family has been informed while tributes to the Liverpool supporter, from St Helens, have poured in on social media, the Liverpool Echo reports.

A friend wrote: "Can’t believe what I’m seeing, I’m in shock, RIP Lee Leyland mate was only speaking a few days ago about your new baby.

"You’ll never walk alone mate absolutely gutted you were the kindest man I knew.

"I always remember when you took me to the Hillsborough memorial at Anfield lad what a day that was."

One read: "Heartbreaking to hear news of Lee Leyland, a true gentleman, had time for everyone this man, always with a smile. Our thoughts are with your lovely little family at this sad time. Goodnight god bless."

Another person posted: "Honestly can’t believe what I’m reading and what’s happened. Thoughts are with your friends and family Lee Leyland RIP mate gone way too soon."

One tribute read: "Still in absolute shock and can’t get my head around it. Rest in peace Lee Leyland. Another top lad gone far too soon."

And another said: "RIP Lee Leyland can't believe another person has gained their wings."

Sefton Coroners confirmed it had been notified of Mr Leyland's death.

The section of road re-opened at around 1.44pm yesterday and forensic officers were seen working on the bridge and the road.

Merseyside Police released a statement yesterday which read: "We can confirm emergency services are in attendance on the East Lancashire Road today, Monday, December 6.

"At around 10.25am, officers were called to the scene after it was believed a man had fallen from a bridge at Abbey Road.

"The man sadly died at the scene.

"His next of kin have been informed.

"Enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances but his death is not believed to be suspicious.

"Road closures remain in place and motorists are advised to seek alternative routes.

"Anyone who witnessed the incident, or has any information, CCTV, or dashcam footage, is asked to contact @MerPolCC, 101 quoting reference 270 of 6/12 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111."
