He dedicated his life to the sport, and his local GAA club, Good Counsel, paid a glowing tribute to him on Facebook after learning of his passing.

They said: "We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Tommy Gunning.

"A legendary Dubs supporter and a long time club member, he will be missed on the terraces of Hill 16.

"Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this sad time. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a anam."

They wrote: "Very sad news reached us today of the passing of Tommy Gunning.

"Tommy was a huge Dubs fan and was always to be found in the Handball Club on match days and I always enjoyed a talk and joke with him.

"Our sincerest condolences to the Gunning family and our thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time.

"May Tommy Rest in Peace."

And Tommy's fellow fans shared their own touching tributes.

One wrote: "Rest in peace to one of the biggest Dublin supporters Tommy Gunning, gone but never forgotten."
