Tributes paid as Cork teen killed in tragic river crash will be laid to rest

Tributes have been paid to a Cork teen killed in a tragic river crash ahead of his funeral on Friday.

Tadhg Murphy, 19, and 40-year-old Michael Bowen died in the horror accident outside the Cork village of Glengarriff in the early hours of Monday.

The Volkswagen Jetta car that Tadhg was driving left the road a mile outside the town and careered down a 20-foot slope before ending on its roof in three feet of water.

Two other passengers survived including one man who was treated for his injuries in hospital.

The other survivor was hailed a hero for pulling him from the submerged wreck.

Tadhg and Michael were unable to free themselves from the car.

Local people who knew them described them in online tributes as "two legends".

Others described the deaths as “heartbreaking” and left simple rest in peace messages while a friend posted a photo of Tadhg with pals at a wedding and said: “Rest easy Tidge.”

While Tadhg's school Scoil Fhianchna in Glengarriff wrote: "All at Scoil Fhiachna were deeply saddened to hear of the tragic and untimely passing of former pupil Tadhg Murphy.

"We send our sincerest condolences to the family and friends of Tadgh and Mike Bowen. Ar dheis Dé go raibh a n-anamacha.

"Our thoughts are also with the two survivors and their families at this difficult time."

The tragic teenager was studying biophysics and chemistry in Trinity College in Dublin.

And Tadhg’s family have now confirmed that the young man will be laid to rest on Friday in Glengarriff.
