Tributes paid after tragic death of garda John McCallion - whose brother Robert died on duty in 2009

Tributes have been paid after the tragic death of serving garda John McCallion.

Mr McCallion, 48, was found unresponsive beside his bicycle near his home in Swinford, Co Mayo on Friday evening.

Emergency services attended the scene at 7pm and John's body was removed to Mayo University Hospital for post-mortem examination.

It is understood that an autopsy will take place today.

John McCallion was a serving Garda and was a brother of Garda Robert McCallion, who died when he was hit by a speeding car while on duty in Letterkenny, Co Donegal in 2009.

Robert was aged 30 at the time of his death and was given a full State funeral.

The two McCallion brothers followed a family tradition in joining An Garda Siochana, with their father, uncles and cousins all serving in the force.

In a statement, gardai said: "Gardaí in Claremorris are investigating the sudden death of a pedal cyclist that occurred on the road between Kiltimagh and Swinford on Friday 24th May, 2019. 

"The man (late 40s) was out cycling when it appears he took a turn and fell from his bicycle, with serious injuries.

"He was removed to Mayo University Hospital, Castlebar where he later passed away on Friday night.

"The post mortem has concluded and the deceased died of natural causes - a file will be prepared for the Coroners Court."

Details have been announced for John's funeral which will take place on Tuesday in his hometown of Swinford.

A post on RIP.ie said: "Deeply regretted by his loving wife Colette, daughters Sarah and Grace and son Robert, parents Nancy and Bob, sisters Noreen and Deirdre and predeceased by his brother Robert R.I.P.

"Sadly missed by his brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, uncles, aunts, family circle, Garda Colleagues and friends.

"Reposing in Campbell's Funeral Home Swinford on Monday from 3pm until 8pm.

"Mass on Tuesday at 12 noon in the Church of Our Lady Help of Christians Swinford with funeral proceeding to Kilconduff Cemetery.

"May John Rest In Peace."

Paying tribute online, a Swinford local added: "R.I.P John one of life's true gentleman .

"A man with a profound respect for others and a life full of integrity. May you rest in peace and may peace enfold your family at this sad and difficult time."
