Tribute paid to Leeds Royal Mail worker who died from coronavirus

A heartfelt tribute has been paid to a Royal Mail worker from Leeds who died after contracting coronavirus.

Selim Ghebru Gaim tested positive for the virus after showing mild symptoms, but when his condition got worse he was admitted to the Intensive Care Unit at St James's University Hospital.

He died in hospital on April 15 – just 11 days after his 34th birthday.

He was born in Sudan and studied in Russia for several years, before he moved to Harehills and began working for Royal Mail.

A GoFundMe page has been set up to raise money for his family and generous people have already donated more than £6,700.

"He was hard-working person with a great personality and he was sociable with everyone in his community," said his friend Danait Fikadu.

"He was loved by many and was an intelligent man who had infectious energy.

"He tested positive for Covid-19, but had mild symptoms and was told to go home and self isolate, however, when his condition worsened he went to hospital again and was in the Intensive Care Unit.

"He passed away on April 15.

"I’m doing this campaign to support his family, especially mum and dad as they’re not in the UK."

There are now 1,049 confirmed cases of coronavirus in Leeds and 145 people have lost their lives to the virus in the city's hospitals.
