Trey Burton held out of OTAs after undergoing sports hernia surgery

Chicago Bears tight end Trey Burton missed last season’s playoff game against the Philadelphia Eagles for what was described as a groin injury. Finally, we have some clarity on what actually was wrong.

Burton is being held out of offseason team activities after having sports hernia surgery, a procedure coach Matt Nagy said was connected to last year’s missed playoff game.

“It’s similar to what he had at the end of the season,” Nagy said Wednesday. “And so when the season was over, we just thought, ‘OK, let’s pull back a little bit, and let’s let him get a little bit of rest, come back and see where it’s at.’ We did that and he just started …. he wasn’t feeling really comfortable with it. And so we went ahead, and a couple months ago, he ended up getting sports hernia surgery.”

Getting Burton back to 100% health is a key to the offense reaching its maximum upside. While he was productive at times last season, he wasn’t nearly as effective as most had projected when the Bears signed him to a lucrative four-year, $32 million contract in free agency.

Burton ended his first season in Chicago with 54 catches for 569 yards and six touchdowns.
