Trevor Noah thanks fans and black women who shaped his life in teary The Daily Show exit

Trevor Noah has filmed The Daily Show for the last time as he bid a teary farewell to the show he has fronted for seven years.

The comedian was clearly emotional as he gave his final address from behind the famous desk. Taking a moment to thank all those who had watched the show during his time as host, Trevor gave a special shout out to the black women who had helped to shape his life.

He began his exit speech: "I’m grateful to you every single one of you. I remember when we started the show, we couldn’t get enough people to fill an audience.

"Then I look at this now and I don’t take it for granted ever. Every seat that has ever been filled to watch something I’m doing is always appreciated because I know the empty seat that sits behind it.

"Thank you to people who watch, the people who share the clips, everyone who’s had an opinion, everyone who’s been kind enough and gracious enough, even if it’s a critique."

He even thanked those who aren't a fan of his stand-up, joking he appreciated them giving him ratings by "hate watching".

His closing moments then saw him thank black women. "I’ve often been credited with having these grand ideas," he said.

"Who do you think teaches me, who do you think has shaped me, nourished me, informed me. From my mom, my gran, my aunts, all these black women in my life but then in America as well. I always tell people if you truly want to learn about America, talk to Black women.

"Because unlike everybody else Black women can’t afford to f*** around and find out. Black people understand how hard it is when things go bad."

Name-checking the likes of Bad Feminist author Roxane Gay and MeToo founder Tarana Burke, he added: "I’m grateful to them, I’m grateful to you. This has been an honour."

Taking to Twitter, celebs were quick to praise Trevor for his achievements. Among those sending well wishes was tennis player Roger Federer, who wrote: "Stopped by the @TheDailyShow to see my friend @Trevornoah. Thank you for having me on one of your last shows."

Rex Chapman also commented: "Long live Trevor Noah. Break out the tissues..."

On the show's return in January, guest hosts will take the hot seat. They will include Chelsea Handler, Kal Penn, Al Franken, Sarah Silverman, Leslie Jones, Wanda Sykes, D.L. Hughley, John Leguizamo, Marlon Wayans and Hasan Minhaj.
