Tree falls onto house in Cardiff after city is battered by strong winds

A number of trees fell in Cardiff after the city was battered by stormy and windy weather.

Images from one street in Heath show a huge tree that fell onto a house after being felled by the strong winds on Monday night.

Cardiff council said their staff worked throughout the night responding to calls from members of the public as gusts hit the capital.

The tree was removed on Tuesday morning (WALES NEWS SERVICE)

It came as rain and winds of almost 80mph were also seen across Wales on Monday where flooding and strong winds caused disruption on major routes.

Remarkably, no damage was done to the property on Pum Erw Road after a tree fell onto the home.

The tree fell into the house overnight and was removed by Cardiff councill staff on Tuesday morning.

A spokesman for Cardiff council, said: "Our parks team worked throughout last night responding to reports of trees that had fallen or been seriously damaged as a result of the high winds.

"Across the city 12 reports were received overnight in total, and the clean-up operation has continued today as more reports are received."

It came after a Met Office weather warning for wind was upgraded on Sunday morning and rain and wind hit the country on Tuesday morning.

The warning stated: "A vigorous area of low pressure is likely to cross northern England on Monday. Strong winds are expected to the south of the low centre, affecting Wales and western England during Monday afternoon.

"Gusts are likely to widely reach 40 to 50 mph inland, and as high as 60-65 mph around some coasts of southern England and south Wales.

"The winds should gradually ease through Tuesday morning. The strong winds will be accompanied by some heavy rain at times."

Thursday and Friday will see further scattered showers but plenty of sunny spells too. Saturday a band of rain and strong winds move in from the southwest.
