Trayvon Martin to receive bachelor's degree from Florida Memorial University posthumously

ORLANDO, Fla. _ Trayvon Martin will posthumously receive a bachelor's degree from Florida Memorial University, five years after the teenager was killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer in Sanford.

The school posted an announcement on its official Facebook page this week, saying Martin will receive a bachelor of science degree in aviation during its graduation ceremony May 13 to honor the steps he took to become a pilot. Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, graduated from the university in Miami Gardens and will accept the degree, along with Martin's father, Tracy Martin.

George Zimmerman was acquitted of second-degree murder in the unarmed teenager's death. Martin was 17 years old when he was killed in 2012.

His death helped spark the Black Lives Matter movement and led his parents to create the Trayvon Martin Foundation, which is aimed at ending gun violence and headquartered at FMU.

According to the Facebook post, the school also plans to hold a post-commencement fundraiser for the foundation.
