Travellers to Wales from Hungary will have to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival from Saturday

Travellers arriving in the UK from Hungary and the French island of Reunion will have to self-isolate for two weeks from Saturday, the Welsh health minister has announced.

The new restriction will come into force at 4am on September 12, Vaughan Gething confirmed on Thursday afternoon.

He also added that travellers arriving into the country from Sweden will no longer need to enter quarantine for 14 days.

Mr Gething said the travel regulations, which came into force on June 8, have been kept under constant review. The two countries will now be removed from the Travel Corridor list.

He said: "Yesterday I reviewed the latest Joint Biosecurity Centre (JBC) assessments and I have decided that Hungary and Reunion will be removed from the list of exempt countries and territories and that Sweden will be added to this list.

"Tomorrow [Friday] I will lay the necessary regulations which will come into force at 04:00 on Saturday, September 12."

Sweden hit the headlines during the early stages of the pandemic for its "herd immunity" plan instead of a national lockdown.

So far the nation has recorded 5,838 deaths due to Covid-19 — the fifth-highest rate per capita in Europe .

But new infection numbers have been plummeting since June despite having no lockdown or other restrictions.
