Travellers set up encampment by children's play park in Weston-super-Mare

A group of travellers have set up camp near a children's play park in Weston-super-Mare.

Pictures taken from the scene show several caravans and cars parked on the playground near Locking Castle.

The encampment was first reported on the Spotted in Weston-super-Mare Facebook page shortly after 5pm on Wednesday (May 22), reports Somerset Live.

Some residents have argued online that the council should move them on while others said they are not bothering anyone and should be left alone.

Travellers have stopped at several locations in the Weston area recently, including near the sea front at the start of this week.

A separate encampment was recently set up in St Werburgh’s, Bristol, by a pair of "gypsies", who quickly formed a bond with residents.

The people behind the Bristol camp, Marc, 58, and nephew Luke, self-described Romani gypsies, have spent their lives travelling in horse-drawn wagons and arrived in Mina Road Park at the weekend.

What are the rights of travellers?

Marc told Bristol Live: “We’ve been astonished by how much the local community love us.”

One resident added: “They’ve made so many people happy. There’s been lots and lots of parents bringing their kids over, just to see the baby chicks and the horses."
