Travellers on Durdham Down say they are there for Funderworld

Travellers camped on Durdham Down say they are in Bristol to enjoy the Funderworld amusement park.

Eight cars and 12 caravans have pitched up on the grassy area near the White Tree roundabout, as first reported by Bristol Live yesterday (April 13).

One member of the camp, who did not wish to be named, today (April 14) said they were staying there to visit Funderworld, which recently returned to Durdham Down for its third season.

He revealed they hope to come back again next year, but did not wish to comment further.

Next to the vehicles on the site this afternoon, there were propane tanks, a sun lounger and meat being cooked on a barbecue.

Westbury-on-Trym and Henleaze councillor Steve Smith (Cons) said council officers have been contacted about the camp.

But he acknowledged they would not be able to start taking action until tomorrow (April 15).

The full statement

His statement, released on social media, read: "We are aware of the traveller encampment which has arrived on the Downs by St Monicas over this weekend.

"My colleague Geoff has already contacted the officers responsible asking them to take swift action to move the group on, especially given the large number of people using the area at the moment to visit Funderworld.

"We don’t expect a response until officers are at their desks on Monday morning, and then I fear that this will not be dealt with as swiftly as we would like.

"In the mean time, the council’s policy is that the response to these sort of encampments depends upon the impact that they have on the local area. It is really important that we can build up a picture of the impact of the current encampment.

"As I passed earlier today the area seemed tidy and peaceful, but if there is any environmental impact (e.g. litter or damage to the Downs), or anti-social behaviour please do report it to the police on 101 as well as letting me or my fellow Councillors know (either here or at cllr.steve.smith@bristol.gov.uk).

"Of course if you see any crime in progress then please report it on 999."
