Why is Kepa leaving Chelsea for just £5 million?

Saturday 7 June 2025 17:01 , Oli Gent

It might seem odd that Chelsea are willing to let the world’s most expensive goalkeeper leave for just £5 million, especially to their archrivals Arsenal.

However, there is an explanation.

The reason is that when Kepa joined Bournemouth on loan last season, the Spaniard agreed to a pay cut, but insisted on inserting a new release clause into his new terms that would allow him an easy exit from west London.

As a result, that has been triggered, and Arsenal have themselves a second goalkeeper, after missing out on Joan Garcia to Barcelona.

Redknapp makes Pochettino prediction

Saturday 7 June 2025 15:55 , Tashan Deniran-Alleyne

Could Mauricio Pochettino make a sensational return to Tottenham following Ange Postecoglou's sacking?

Well, Thomas Frank is the front-runner for the job, but Harry Redknapp is not ruling out Pochettino - who is currently in charge of the USMNT.

Redknapp said: "Let's not kid ourselves. Tottenham is a big club. The training facilities are out of this world. The stadium is probably the best stadium in the world now.

"What a job for somebody. They've got a good squad. When they're all fit and playing, they've got 20-odd players there that are very, very good players. Some good young players, too, the kids who have come through this year look very good.

“There'll be an awful lot of people who would love that opportunity to manage Tottenham for sure, and Frank at Brentford is a big odds-on favourite.

"Even Mauricio Pochettino - a friend of mine rang me and said, you know, what about Pochettino going back there? It’s possible. I wouldn't write him off. Naturally, I'd be pleased."

Arsenal are advancing in talks to beat Juventus to the hiring of renowned talent-spotter Matteo Tognozzi.

Tognozzi is expected to take up a senior role in Arsenal’s recruitment team and work alongside the club’s sporting director Andrea Berta.

The addition of Tognozzi would be a coup for the Gunners, not least because he was being courted by his old club Juventus.

Tognozzi played a key role in the foundation of Juventus Next Gen - which is essentially an Under-23 side playing in Italy’s third tier - before becoming Granada’s sporting director in 2023.

“Normally, they’d want a decision this week but it’s still yet to be made. So, perhaps, they will wait to see how serious Arsenal are. Leroy Sané would like to go to London – this would be his favoured option if he were to leave Bayern Munich.

“That was his clear message to his new agent, Pini Zahavi. Zahavi himself is based in London and is involved in talks with all the major London clubs. Now that Arsenal are on the table we have to wait and see if the Gunners are prepared to get concrete.”
