This "tranquil" loch in Scotland with "stunning views" is one of the best places in the whole of the UK for seeing the Northern Lights.
Clatteringshaws Loch, in the Galloway Forest International Dark Sky Park, was named alongside spots like Craig-y-nos in Wales and bleak moorlands around the Ribblehead Viaduct in the Yorkshire Dales.

Highlighting why the forest is among the best places for seeing the aurora borealis, a trusted consumer watchdog said the UK's first International Dark Sky Park is far removed from the light pollution found elsewhere.
Some of the best places to "gaze up at the universe" here are Clatteringshaws Loch and the "vast reservoir" of Loch Doon, "where you might see stars mirrored in the waters," according to Which?.
Praising the beauty spot, Forestry and Land Scotland said Clatteringshaws Loch is a "tranquil" haven for waterbirds in the summer months, featuring a number of roadside pull-ins to enjoy the view.

On a clear day, the "mighty" Merrick, the highest hill in the Southern Uplands, can be seen.
The organisation told visitors to "soak up the stunning views or meander beside the loch to the historic Bruce's Stone, one of two stones dedicated to the Scottish king."
It added that this is also one of the "best places" to enjoy the night sky as it overlooks the "darkest part" of the Forest Park.
