Tragedy as man dies at scene of police incident in Durham city centre

A man has tragically died at the scene of a police incident in Durham city centre.

Emergency crews were alerted to reports of concern for a man in the proximity of Station Approach in Durham at around 11am on Thursday (May 5). Several police and ambulance crews descended on the scene with the road being closed off.

The road was not accessible between North Road and the train station as a result of the incident with traffic being diverted. Go North East bus services were unable to run.

The North East Ambulance Service dispatched six crews, including a Hazardous Area Response Team, emergency ambulances, a rapid response paramedic and a clinical team leader, to the incident.

Paramedics issued treatment but the man was pronounced dead at the scene. He has not yet been formally identified but his family have been informed.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: "Police were called to reports of an incident on Station Approach in Durham City shortly after 11am today. Emergency services attended the scene but sadly, a man was pronounced dead.

"Formal identification has yet to take place, but his family have been informed. The death is not being treated as suspicious and a report is being prepared for the coroner."
