Trafford's recycling rates is soaring ahead of Greater Manchester alone

More than half of Trafford’s waste is recycled and the borough’s rate is higher than Greater Manchester’s as a whole.

According to figures from the Government’s Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, Trafford recycled 59 per cent of its waste overall in 2017-18.

This is 12 per cent higher than the 47 per cent of waste that is recycled across Greater Manchester.

Nationally, 43 per cent of waste is recycled or composted across England.

The figures show Trafford’s recycling rate has increased by 18 per cent overall since 2010-11, when the borough recycled 41 per cent of its waste.

But since 2014-15 the recycling rate has slightly fallen in the borough; coming down from 62 per cent four years ago.

Coun Stephen Adshead, Trafford Council’s cabinet member for the environment, said: “We are so pleased with the effort Trafford residents put into recycling.

"It shows that Trafford is making a conscientious effort to recycle as best they can. But we can still do more.”

The cabinet member added that the council introduced its Recycle and Go programme last year which allows residents to recycle their litter in segregated litter bins.

Coun Adshead added: “Recycling is now part of the norm – whether it is at home or on the street. By making recycling as accessible as possible, we are hope to continue increasing our recycling rate and to remain the best in the region.”
