Traffic warning for M5 motorists ahead of Europe's largest illuminated carnival

Motorists planning to travel on the M5 have been issued a warning ahead of a carnival taking place this Saturday.

The Bridgwater Guy Fawkes Carnival is the largest illuminated carnival in Europe, attracting up to 120,000 spectators.

Traffic levels are expected to increase between J23 and J24 on the M5 on Saturday (November 2), particularly during the late afternoon and evening.

Highways England has also warned that access into Bridgwater from J24 will be closed from 4pm on Saturday, ahead of the new carnival start time of 6pm.

Gareth Price, Highways England's emergency planning officer for the South West, said: “The carnival is a popular event in the south west and can lead to increased traffic volumes between J24 and J23 of the M5, particularly between late afternoon and early evening and from 9pm onwards.

What is Bridgwater Carnival?

“We advise all people intending to use the M5 on Saturday evening to plan their journeys, listen out for radio updates and to check our traffic and travel information channels, particularly our @HighwaysSWEST Twitter feed.”
