Traffic warning as Extinction Rebellion campaigners plan protest during morning rush hour

Motorists can expect disruption on the roads due to a protest planned during the morning rush hour.

Police say they've been informed of two "peaceful protests" planned in the city centre on Friday morning (September 20).

Around 8am a "mass bike ride" is expected to set off, organised by the environmentalist campaign group Extinction Rebellion.

The route is planned to take in Maid Marian Way, Collin Street, Canal Street plus both Upper and Lower Parliament Street.

Police believe the protest will last until 9.15am.

Another is planned to be held at Old Market Square at 11am.

Police say this one is likely to last a couple of hours.

Inspector Paul Gummer, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: "We’re putting plans in place to provide a safe environment for those attending the events, as well as keeping people living, working, visiting and travelling in and around the city centre safe, while doing all we can to help keep any disruption to a minimum.

"Our officers will be in the area to limit the disruption, however we anticipate there is likely to be an impact on traffic in and around the city centre and would advise motorists to factor this into their travel plans.

"While there’s no evidence to suggest that these protests will be anything but peaceful, you may see an increased police presence as we look to maintain security and offer reassurance.

"Our priority on the day will be to ensure the safety of you, the public, to keep disruption to a minimum as we look to facilitate a lawful and peaceful protest and to deal positively with any criminal activity."

Extinction Rebellion protesters caused disruption earlier this year with several demonstrations taking place in Nottingham city centre.

One campaigner pledged to "bring the entire city to a standstill".
