Town in Laois covered in 'human faeces' after waste spillage from lorry

The main street in a town in Laois was covered in a what is believed to be a type of excrement after a spillage this afternoon.

The incident happened in Mountmellick on Wednesday afternoon when a lorry carrying waste, that was coming from a treatment plant, spilled over at a junction in the town.

Pictures seen in local paper Laois Live show large amounts of waste covering the road, footpaths and shopfronts where it happened.

Laois County Council have yet to confirm to the Irish Mirror what type of spillage it was, however it is believed to be human faeces - and there were reports of a strong smell from those who were at the scene.

Councillor Paddy Bracken, who saw the waste on the street in Mountmellick, said it happened around 2pm and was quickly cleaned up.

“It was a truck that was coming from the treatment plant and it spilled over at the junction,” he told the Irish Mirror.

“It was all cleaned up in fairness to the council, they cleaned it up, and the company that was involved had it all power washed down now. So it’s all cleaned up, there was no injuries."

Mr Bracken said he was unsure exactly what the waste was but had been informed it was human waste and said it did have a smell off it.

“I don’t know exactly what it was - someone said it was [human faeces],” he said. “I seen it but I didn’t go and examine it to be honest.”

Laois County Council said the spillage took place this afternoon and that it has since been cleaned up. They could not confirm if it was human faeces that had been spilled.

Speaking to the Irish Mirror, Laois County Council's Michelle McCormack said: “There was a spillage earlier on from a contractor’s lorry, an overspill of waste.

“Laois County Council had been in contact with them and they were out within the hour so it’s already cleaned up and everything is back to normal there.”
