Tottenham v Chelsea live: Result as Blues clinch impressive victory in Premier League derby

Chelsea beat hosts Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in the Premier League on Saturday with Brazil striker Joao Pedro scoring the only goal of the game and getting back on the scoresheet for the first time since August.

Enzo Maresca's men, stung by last weekend's home defeat by Sunderland, took the lead when Moises Caicedo stole the ball from Micky van de Ven and squared for Joao Pedro who made no mistake from eight metres in the 34th minute.

Chelsea climbed to fourth place in the table on 17 points after 10 games, one rung below Spurs on goal difference.

Spurs have now registered just one win against Chelsea in their last 14 Premier League meetings

Tottenham Hotspur FC 0 - 1 Chelsea FC

Full-time: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:36 , Lawrence Ostlere

So Tottenham and Chelsea are both on 17 points after 10 games, level with Manchester United and Sunderland – though the Black Cats have a game in hand. They are all seven points behind league leaders Arsenal.

Full-time: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:34 , Lawrence Ostlere

“They never laid a glove on this Chelsea side,” says Jamie Redknapp, tearing into Tottenham’s performance.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are celebrating in front of their fans. They are loving this one.

Full-time: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:31 , Lawrence Ostlere

A well deserved away win for Chelsea. They played well – Moises Caicedo was immense – and Spurs weren’t very good at all.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:28 , Lawrence Ostlere

90+4 min: What a save! Fernandez feeds Joao Pedro in the box and he must score, but Vicario rushes out and blocks the strike. Spurs are all over the place.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:27 , Lawrence Ostlere

90+2 min: What a miss! Chelsea counter and Joao Pedro feeds Gittens in open space in the box, but the winger smashes the ball over the bar. A shocker.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:24 , Lawrence Ostlere

90 min: “Carefree,” rings out from the Chelsea fans. Spurs have six added minutes to find an equaliser.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:21 , Lawrence Ostlere

87 min: Kudus whips a corner into the six-yard box which is easily caught by Sanchez.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:19 , Lawrence Ostlere

84 min: Neto limps off, and he’s replaced by Estevao.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:18 , Lawrence Ostlere

82 min: Chelsea are the team doing the attacking. Pedro Neto dribbles down the right wing, but then collapses on to the floor holding his leg – it looks like cramp. Reece James puts the ball out and Spurs fans boo.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:13 , Lawrence Ostlere

79 min: There isn’t a sense right not that Spurs are really pushing for an equaliser. Frank needs his subs to make a difference.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:09 , Lawrence Ostlere

76 min: Another Chelsea change – Gusto is replaced by Lavia. Reece James will drop from midfield back to right-back.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:08 , Lawrence Ostlere

75 min: Kudus is the latest player booked, for clattering Cucurella.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:08 , Lawrence Ostlere

72 min: Thomas Frank makes three more changes – Simons (who himself was an early substitute), Porro and Kolo Muani are replaced by Odobert, Udogie and Johnson.

Tough on Xavi Simons, but he looks like he needs time to get up to speed.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:05 , Lawrence Ostlere

70 min: Kudus tries to get a shot away in the box but he’s crowded out by Chelsea defenders.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:03 , Lawrence Ostlere

68 min: More handbags among the players after a strong challenge – this time it’s Enzo Fernandez on Joao Palhinha. Replays show he was high, with studs up, but perhaps he gets away with it because it was a graze rather than a crunch on the leg. Yellow, rather than red.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

19:01 , Lawrence Ostlere

66 min: Chelsea make a change – Gittens, who was excellent in midweek, is on for Garnacho.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:58 , Lawrence Ostlere

63 min: He instead plays it short to Kudus, and Chelsea win it back. That was a mess by Spurs and some fans boo.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:57 , Lawrence Ostlere

62 min: Garnacho has a nibble at Porro, and Spurs have a free-kick which the full-back can launch into the box...

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:54 , Lawrence Ostlere

59 min: Simons is booked for a pretty cynical challenge on Garnacho.

Two changes for Spurs – Romero and Richarlison replace Danso and Bentancur.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:51 , Lawrence Ostlere

56 min: Big chance for Chelsea as Garnacho breaks into the box on the left side – sparked by yet another Caicedo tackle – but his cross is just behind Neto who can’t turn it into the net at the far post.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:46 , Lawrence Ostlere

54 min: Reece James delivers a good cross from the right which Enzo Fernandez gets his head to, but he can’t keep it down.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:45 , Lawrence Ostlere

52 min: Porro lifts a free-kick towards Bentancur running around the back of the Chelsea defence, but it’s slightly overhit and runs out for a goal-kick.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:43 , Lawrence Ostlere

50 min: Porro drives down the right and wins a corner from Garnacho’s block. He urges the Spurs crowd to make some noise and they give a little cheer. Kudus’s corner is headed away by a Chelsea defender.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:42 , Lawrence Ostlere

48 min: Caicedo bursts into the Spurs half to pinch the ball from Sarr’s toes before drawing a foul from Danso. Yellow card. Caicedo has been (is?) the best player on the pitch by a distance.

Second half! Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:39 , Lawrence Ostlere

I take it back – Jamie Redknapp briefly looks at the tackle just before the start of this half, saying it was just low enough on the ankle (rather than shin) to be a yellow. Hmmm. Nasty challenge.

Half-time: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:32 , Lawrence Ostlere

I’m surprised there wasn’t more talk in the Sky Sports studio about Rodrigo Bentancur’s challenge on Reece James. I thought it was poor.

Second half coming right up.

Half-time: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:28 , Lawrence Ostlere

Joao Pedro scored the goal, but Chelsea’s opener was all about the tenacity of Moises Caicedo:

Half-time: Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:23 , Lawrence Ostlere

The half-time whistle is greeted by boos from the home fans.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:23 , Lawrence Ostlere

45+5 min: A rare attacking move by Spurs ends with a chance for Kudus, whose first-time shot towards the far corner is well saved by Sanchez.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:20 , Lawrence Ostlere

45+3 min: It was actually Chalobah, not James, who was booked for arguing with the referee. James and Bentancur eventually shake hands and play on.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:19 , Lawrence Ostlere

45+2 min: Bentancur snaps in late on James and several players clash in the aftermath of the foul. Replays show it’s a bad tackle, with studs connecting on James’s ankle, but it’s only yellow for Bentancur – and James is booked for complaining. VAR checks but decides not to intervene. I think the Spurs midfielder is a bit lucky there, it’s not a good challenge at all.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:16 , Lawrence Ostlere

45 min: Six minutes of added time, after Bergvall’s early head injury.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:14 , Lawrence Ostlere

42 min: Great save by Vicario after more good play by Chelsea. Gusto runs to the byline and whips a first-time cross towards the penalty spot, which Joao Pedro directs on target, but the goalkeeper does well to parry it clear for a corner.

Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea

18:09 , Lawrence Ostlere

38 min: Spurs fans are letting their frustrations be known. Their players are just not able to string passes together, and Chelsea’s pressure in midfield is telling.

GOAL! Tottenham 0-1 Chelsea (Joao Pedro, 35 min)

18:06 , Lawrence Ostlere

Brilliant by Moises Caicedo, who wins three tackles in a row around and then in the box to steal the ball from Tottenham. The third challenge knocks the ball into the path of Joao Pedro, who simply needs to finish it off from close range.

Sensational pressing by Caicedo!

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

18:03 , Lawrence Ostlere

32 min: It was Pedro Porro who gave the ball away. Joao Pedro tried to give Vicario the eyes but the goalkeeper read it and stuck out a foot to make the crucial save.

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

18:02 , Lawrence Ostlere

30 min: Big save! Spurs give the ball away sloppily and Joao Pedro is suddenly through on goal, but Vicario rushes out and stops the shot with his legs.

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

18:01 , Lawrence Ostlere

28 min: Danso winds up the long throw from the right but it loops high into the sky and is easily caught by Sanchez. The Chelsea keeper tries to launch a counterattack but Enzo Fernandez overhits his pass and it breaks down.

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

17:57 , Lawrence Ostlere

25 min: Vicario is down in the middle of the pitch with some sort of leg injury, and he’s receiving treatment.

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

17:53 , Lawrence Ostlere

22 min: Chelsea clear their lines and when Spurs come back at them, Sanchez races out to collect Simons’ deep cross. An even start to this derby, so far.

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

17:52 , Lawrence Ostlere

20 min: Porro’s corner is headed away at the near post by Chalobah, and the same defender deals with Porro’s second ball in, heading it away for a corner from the other side, to be taken by Kudus...

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

17:51 , Lawrence Ostlere

18 min: Garnacho gets a shot away from inside the box but it’s deflected and easy enough for Vicario. At the other, Spurs earn a corner, to be taken by Pedro Porro...

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

17:47 , Lawrence Ostlere

15 min: Enzo Fernandez cannot believe he hasn’t won a free-kick after a tussle with Kolo Muani on the right side outside the Spurs box. I’m not sure the Spurs striker got much of the ball, but the referee waves away the appeals.

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

17:45 , Lawrence Ostlere

13 min: Garnacho races down the left side and earns a corner after his cross his blocked.

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

17:44 , Lawrence Ostlere

11 min: Chelsea pass the ball around nicely in the Spurs but half without any great threat. Tottenham seem happy to play without the ball.

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

17:42 , Lawrence Ostlere

8 min: No real chances of note yet. Simons has come on and tucked into a narrow midfield which is looking very congested.

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

17:37 , Lawrence Ostlere

5 min: It looks like Bergvall is not going to be allowed to continue, although he’s unhappy about it. Xavi Simons is being prepared.

Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

17:34 , Lawrence Ostlere

2 min: A few niggly fouls in the opening moments suggest this game is going to be fesity. Lucas Bergvall takes a ball to the head, meanwhile, and needs a bit of treatment.

Kick-off! Tottenham 0-0 Chelsea

17:31 , Lawrence Ostlere

Chelsea get the game going and immediately send the ball back to Robert Sanchez, who pumps in forwards.

Here we go then, the players are out on the pitch and the Spurs fans are in good voice tonight...

Marc Cucurella speaks before kick-off

17:25 , Lawrence Ostlere

"It’s a special game, it doesn’t matter about the last results, it’s a big game. Every time you come here, it’s tough but last season it was a great win.

"It’s not good enough to play one or two good games. Hopefully we can have some consistency and play at our best level."

Here’s Enzo Maresca speaking before kick-off – he says expects Tottenham to press high and hard against Chelsea tonight:

Jamie Gittens admits spectacular first goal for Chelsea felt ‘really special’

17:00 , Jack Rathborn

“I just thought I would try and shoot because I was tired, and it went in off the post.

“There were lots of emotions in the celebrations. Of course, I would’ve wanted to score earlier [in my Chelsea career], but it’s happened now and I thank God that I have scored today, and I hope there are many more to come.

“It felt really special to score my first goal for Chelsea, and to win the game and get through to the next round was even better.

“I’m more pleased that we got through to the next round today – I’m really happy. My team-mates have been really good.

“They’ve been talking to me individually, helping me with what to do and what not to do on the pitch. Everyone has helped and put an arm around me.”

Thomas Frank criticises referee after Newcastle score while Djed Spence was tying his boot laces

16:48 , Jack Rathborn

“It is always disappointing to lose, always disappointing to go out of the tournament that we would love to progress in,” Frank told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Small margins decided the game tonight, it was a very even game with chances and situations in both boxes. The two goals were also small margins where there was two mistakes – one unfortunately from Chris Kavanagh, in terms of things you need to give. Djed Spence had his boot off. He needs time to tie his boot and he didn’t. His marker, Schar, scored.

“I have spoken to Chris about it, and we will keep that between Chris and I.”

Chelsea team news

16:29 , Lawrence Ostlere

For Chelsea, Malo Gusto comes back into the side at right-back and Reece James moves into midfield. I think Chelsea look much stronger when Enzo Fernandes plays as the No 10 with two solid midfielders behind him rather than Joao Pedro as the 10. Joao Pedro leads the line, with Marc Guiu on the bench.

Tottenham team news

16:23 , Lawrence Ostlere

So, Randal Kolo Muani starts up front for Spurs but there’s no Xavi Simons, who is on the bench.

It is quite a defensive line-up by Thomas Frank – how many in the side are naturally attacking players? Two, perhaps.

Tottenham v Chelsea – teams

Enzo Maresca provides Cole Palmer update on Chelsea return from injury

15:52 , Jack Rathborn

Enzo Maresca has revealed Cole Palmer is on track to return to Chelsea training before the end of the month.

The England international has been suffering from a groin injury and last played for the Blues against Manchester United in September.

And after missing eight games, Maresca detailed how Palmer’s rehabilitation has been going well since a setback two weeks ago.

“I just met him in the canteen for breakfast, and I told him, I will say that in one week you are back,” Maresca said ahead of Chelsea’s trip to Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.

“He was laughing. Now with Cole, exactly the same plan. Wait, and hopefully he can be back soon.”

“They are both doing well and it’s what we want from our wingers, scoring goals and assists,” said Maresca.

“They are both adapting every day to the way we work. It’s good to have both doing well so we can choose one or the other.”

Thomas Frank hails Micky Van de Ven improvement

15:35 , Jack Rathborn

“My biggest job, together with the coaching staff and all the staff, is to maximise potential at the club, in the team, in every individual player, every staff member,” Frank said on Van de Ven’s potential.

“A fantastic left foot, composed, can pass it short, long, can drive with the ball, and can defend well.

“Now he’s taking the steps up on set pieces, both boxes, and leadership. So, to add to the next level is about consistency, game in, game out, but he’s in a good place..

Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea

15:25 , Jack Rathborn

Good afternoon and welcome to Independent Sport’s live coverage of Tottenham Hotspur v Chelsea.

This fixture is always exciting and last year’s contest produced a chaotic 4-3 win for the Blues.

Thomas Frank’s side sit above Enzo Maresca’s world champions in the Premier League table though, with a home win required to keep pace with leaders Arsenal.

Chelsea will hope to bounce back from a shock home loss to Sunderland, having already refound their form at Wolves in the Carabao Cup.

While Spurs will hope to return to winning ways here after a midweek defeat at Newcastle in the cup. Follow for all the latest updates, team news and more.
