Tottenham defender Pedro Porro says Ange Postecoglou staying on “would be good for the dressing room” after admitting he has been impacted by talk of the manager being sacked.
Postecoglou led Spurs to their first piece of silverware since 2008 with a 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the all-English Europa League final last month.
Though that success in Bilbao - which was celebrated with an open-top bus parade in north London two days later - may not be enough for the Australian tactician to keep his job.
This is because Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is weighing up the team’s performance in the Premier League having finished 17th in the table, just one place above the relegation zone.
That said, Postecoglou has already made it clear that he wants to stay on at Spurs and Porro is keen for that outcome too.
In an interview with the Guardian, Porro opened up on speculation that Postecoglou could be sacked: “I’m not thinking about club football right now because I am here with Spain and we have two important games this week.
“But him continuing would be good for the dressing room. He has built a very good group and coaches also need time. In the league things didn’t go well but he makes you win a trophy.
“That’s important too. The people in the dressing room with weight have to understand that.
“But as I say I’m thinking about the national team now; there will be time for that.”
“I’m not going to lie, it did impact me to see [people say] they were going to sack him to be honest. I’m very close to him. He’s been an important coach for me and it’s thanks to him that I have brought out my [best] football these two years.
“It’s complicated because in football in general things don’t always depend on you but, honestly, in the team – I think, in my opinion – we’re happy with him.”
