Tottenham news: Willian Jose on failed transfer, two unusual deals Spurs completed, summer plans

So that's that then, the January transfer window has ended.

Tottenham made two new signings, bringing in Gedson Fernandes and Steven Bergwijn, but deadline day was quiet with no new arrivals.

Attention now turns back to matters on the field and a Premier League match with Manchester City this weekend at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Pep Guardiola brings his side to the capital for the Sunday afternoon kick-off and Spurs fans will at least have one new signing to cheer, with Jose Mourinho admitting Bergwijn would play a part.

All the latest news stories from around N17 are in our round-up below.

Unusual loan deals

It was a very quiet transfer deadline day for Tottenham in the end.

Spurs were after a new striker, but could not get a deal over the line for one and so no new signings were made on deadline day.

However, a couple of young players did leave the club on loan.

And they were unusual loan deals too.

Here's why.

Mourinho's pointed remark

It is no secret that Jose Mourinho and Tottenham wanted to sign a striker during the January transfer window.

But they failed to do so.

They did sign a forward by the name of Steven Bergwijn, who can play anywhere across the front line.

But he's not an out-and-out striker, as Mourinho was only too keen to make clear.

Willian Jose on failed move

Willian Jose from Real Sociedad was one of the frontmen tipped to move to N17.

But while Spurs were very interested, again, he was another a deal could not be finalised for.

Real Sociedad admitted on transfer deadline day that there would be no more movement in or out and Jose opened up on the failed move to Spurs later in the day.

Summer transfer plans

So attention immediately turns to the summer transfer window now.

The summer window will be Jose Mourinho's first one at Tottenham and will allow him to put his stamp on the team ahead of his first full season at the club.

So what does Spurs' January business mean for the summer?

Will Tottenham be expecting to make big moves when the summer window opens after the 2019/20 season ends?

Or will it be more of the same from Daniel Levy and co in terms of not strengthening in the places the supporters want?
