Tottenham news: Vertonghen's contract offer after Alderweireld deal plus injury boost vs Chelsea

It is set to be a big weekend for Jose Mourinho's Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea will cross London to take on Spurs at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in what could be an emotional meeting against their former boss.

The new head coach at Stamford Bridge, Frank Lampard, was a key player for the Portuguese during their time together at the Blues, and he will be hoping to beat his old mentor, not least because he needs a result.

After a shock 1-0 loss to Bournemouth in their last match, the west Londoners will be going all out to beat Spurs on their own turf.

Jose Mourinho: I am 100% Tottenham

Mourinho will not want to loose face after having cast doubt over the real quality of Chelsea's young side.

Lampard's assistant manager Jody Morris could not help but react to comments made by the Spurs head coach prior to his appointment during a segment as pundit on TV.

The apparent ill-feeling that may exist between Mourinho and his former club is sure to be a side-plot to Tottenham's clash with Chelsea.

However, there are plenty more stories on Spurs worth catching up on this morning.

Toby Alderweireld's new contract

Despite expecting to lose Belgium international Toby Alderweireld in the summer over a cut-price clause in his old contract, Spurs are to keep the centre-back after all.

He signed a new three-and-a-half year deal on the morning of Friday December 20 ahead of the weekend's clash with Chelsea.

In a statement posted to follow the announcement of his contract extension the 30-year-old said: "I am very, very happy. No words can describe my time at Spurs. There is no other place I can be happy.

"I am honoured to play for this club and I'm just a small part of this club getting to the next level."

Quite the turn around for a player who had seemed set to leave Tottenham during Mauricio Pochettino's reign.

Jan Vertonghen's contract status

Alderweireld may not be the only senior member of the Totenham squad to be handed a new deal to sign in the near future.

Mourinho would also like to retain the services of Jan Vertonghen, the other Belgian centre-back who has played a key role at the heart of the Spurs defence in recent seasons.

That could prove difficult after the Portuguese hinted that the player may not be so happy to commit themselves to the future, at least compared to Alderweireld.

"I think a player will sign a contract when the club wants," said the Tottenham head coach in his pre-match press conference.

"I am the club, Mr Levy is the club. When the player wants, when the family wants, when the agent wants.

"If one of these parts doesn't want, it is very difficult to make it happen unless the player changes agent and gets an agent who also wants."

Tanguy Ndombele injury news

Can Tottenham's record signing from the summer win his race to be fit enough to take on Chelsea?

The latest news is positive for Spurs with Tanguy Ndombele on track to recover.

He has not featured since a 2-1 defeat against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday, December 4 but did play in three of Jose Mourinho's first four games in charge.

A formidable presence in midfield with or without the ball, he is able to shrug off opponents who would wish to snatch away possession while also creating chances for others.

Ndombele's valuable array of skills will be needed against a Chelsea side boasting the quality of Mateo Kovacic and N'Golo Kante in midfield.
