Tottenham Hotspur Women sent stark message after humbling defeat against Chelsea

Rehanne Skinner says Spurs Women need to look after the ball better as Chelsea snapped their six-game unbeaten streak in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League.

Spurs slipped to a first defeat under Skinner’s charge despite dominating the early stages, with Kit Graham twice coming close to an opening goal.

The north London side have suffered defeats in each of their meetings with top four sides this season - by an aggregate score of 21-1 - and Skinner has a message for her players.

“We need to tighten up on some of the things we do on the ball, so we’re not transitioning into defensive situations as often as we have against top sides,” she said.

“We need to show bit of composure and quality on the ball to build possession for longer spells of time. When we gave it away, we had to work really hard to regain our shape.

“We have to better in those situations to take the pressure off. Sustaining our press is important as well so we can manage the game differently.

“When playing teams like this, those two things create more issues if you don’t do them well.”

Tottenham face Aston Villa next weekend as they aim to get back to winning ways ahead of a sticky run of fixtures in the latter part of the season.

Skinner’s side face Arsenal, Manchester City, Manchester United and Chelsea in successive matches in April.

Star goalkeeper Becky Spencer has bailed them out on several occasions this season and Skinner revealed she was absent with injury, heading for a scan tomorrow.

“The scan on Monday will give us more detail on how we’ll move forward with Becky, but we don’t have any further information unfortunately."
