Tottenham handed Carabao Cup boost as EFL confirm rule change ahead of semi-final clash

The EFL has confirmed clubs in the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup will be allowed to make up to five substitutions, handing a significant boost to Tottenham.

Until this stage of the competitions, clubs were only allowed to bring on three substitutes, in accordance with the rules initially voted for by Premier League and EFL clubs.

But the EFL agreed to change the rule to allow for five subs in November and the Carabao Cup will now follow suit, allowing the increased number of changes for the semi-finals and final.

The move comes amid fixture congestion this season following the late start to the campaign caused by last year's coronavirus delay.

Though, it is not the only change made by the Carabao Cup this season with semi-finals reduced from two legs to one in the wake of the reduced break between games for clubs up and down the country.

The semi-finals begin with Tottenham's clash with Championship outfit Brentford at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Tuesday before rivals Manchester City and Manchester United face off at Old Trafford on Wednesday evening.

Both of those games will include the five substitutes rule, as agreed by all four clubs still competing in the competition, and clubs will also be allowed to name two more players on the bench with the total rising from seven to nine.

Though, it comes with the caveat that teams can only stop the game a maximum of three times, not including the usual breaks, to make changes, as was the case when the rules were adopted in the Premier League last season.

An EFL statement read: "Following consultation with the four clubs remaining in the competition, nine substitutes can now be named in the matchday squad, with five permitted to take to the pitch during the 90 minutes and extra time if applicable.

"Each team is only permitted a maximum of three opportunities (excluding half time, full time and half time of extra time) to make substitutions during normal time.

"However, if a tie goes to extra time, an additional opportunity to use a substitute(s) will also be permitted but only from the five substitutes allowed. "
