Tottenham could sign 'best defender in the Premier League' as Daniel Levy eyes bargain transfer

Tottenham are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea defender Antonio Rudiger.

According to a fresh report from the Express, Daniel Levy is keen on signing the 28-year-old, who has less than 12 months remaining on his contract with Spurs ' London rivals.

Rudiger has played every single minute for the Blues so far this season in the Premier League and has become an integral part of Thomas Tuchel 's plans.

However, the Germany international could be looking to leave Stamford Bridge in the near future, with the centre-back said to be considering his options before possibly signing a contract extension in west London.

Chelsea and Rudiger have negotiated over a possible new contract, but talks have been unsuccessful so far, it seems.

The former Roma defender fell out of favour under Frank Lampard, prior to Tuchel's arrival, but has re-established himself under his German compatriot.

Levy, though, apparently wants to take advantage of his contractual situation - and if he manages to do that, then Tottenham could be getting themselves the "best defender in the Premier League".

Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand thinks Rudiger has become arguably the best centre-back in the English top-flight since Tuchel's appointment.

“Frank’s respectful and I think he’s honest enough to know and would say Tuchel has done an amazing job,” Ferdinand told his FIVE YouTube channel last month.

“But at the same time I’m sure Frank’s sitting there thinking, ‘well I didn’t see these certain players performing like this when I was there’.

“But then it’s about Frank looking at himself, looking at his tenure there, did he approach things the right way. I’m sure he’s doing all this, he’s looking at, ‘Could I have handled this situation better, could I have handled that player better?’

“That’s what Frank will be going through and he’ll be looking to make sure he rights the wrongs from his time at Chelsea.

“But you can’t do anything but respect and pay homage to what Tuchel has done.

“Look at Rudiger, he’s arguably since Tuchel has been there [at Chelsea], been the best defender in the Premier League. Him or [Ruben] Dias in that time. He’s been unbelievable, he’s like an animal.”

As it stands, Tottenham have Eric Dier, Cristian Romero, Davinson Sanchez and Joe Rodon as their centre-back options, and could do with another alternative to add to their depth.
