Tottenham boss Antonio Conte warns Erik Ten Hag ‘the pressure is massive’ after Manchester United appointment

Tottenham manager Antonio Conte has warned Erik Ten Hag “the pressure is massive” at England’s leading clubs.

The current Ajax boss was officially confirmed as Manchester United’s permanent replacement for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer on Thursday and will take over at the end of the season.

Current incumbent Ralf Rangnick is due to move into a consultancy role.

Conte was strongly linked with a move to Old Trafford before his appointment at Spurs in October has plenty of experience of working in the Premier League, a division he won while in charge of Chelsea between 2016 and 2018.

The Italian has consistently spoken about how high the level in England is as he attempts to take Spurs back into the Champions League.

Both Spurs and United are entrenched in a battle to finish in the top four along with Arsenal and even potentially West Ham.

Speaking at his press conference on Thursday, Conte said: “For sure we are talking about a big club, an important club. Don’t forget that last season United were in second place and improve the squad with Varane, Sancho and Ronaldo.

“It’s strange but they’ve improved the squad and have done worse than last season. It shows it’s not easy, particularly in England.

“In England it’s a big job for every manager, the level is so high. When you’re at Manchester United the pressure is massive. You have to fight to win trophies. It’s not easy because other teams have the same idea.”
