Tottenham and Man United stars praised for ‘proving English critics wrong’ by reaching World Cup final

Hugo Lloris and Raphael Varane have confounded their critics with “magnificent” displays at the World Cup, according to William Gallas.

The former France defender will be backing his country to lift the trophy in Qatar in Sunday’s World Cup final, with the Tottenham and Manchester United stars key to their defence.

“On Wednesday [in the semi-final win over Morocco], Hugo Lloris had to show his quality,” he told Genting Casino.

“A lot of people criticise him, especially in England, and Varane too.

“But I believe they are top class players. Both players are magnificent.”

Gallas believes neither team will lack motivation at Lusail Stadium with Lionel Messi leading Argentina against a France team which won the World Cup four years ago.

He added: “The final is unmissable. On one side, there is Messi who will be desperate to bring the trophy to Argentina.

“It is his last chance to win it and what he has done from the beginning of the tournament is unbelievable. He has put every player on his shoulders and taken them to the final. Messi will be focussed on the final.

“On the other side you have the French. Even though they have won it already, many will want to win it again. They will be the first team to win it in the modern era, so there is plenty of motivation for both teams.”
