'Tory acts of sabotage against our democratic system will deny millions a voice'

The Conservatives have been poor guardians of our precious democracy.

Instead of protecting the right to vote they have gone out of their way to undermine it.

Since they took power, the number of people who have fallen off the electoral roll has risen to more than nine million.

The Tories have also put up new barriers to voting with a law requiring people to show photo ID at the polling station.

Democracy needs public consent to flourish but the Conservatives have let electoral numbers fall because they know those not registered would be likely to vote against them.

At the same time they have drawn up a list of acceptable photo IDs that favours older voters – those more likely to vote Tory.

These acts of sabotage against our democratic system will deny millions a voice.

Which is why it is more important than ever that everyone is encouraged to register to vote.

The ballot box is the only defence against the abuse of power.

Puppy love

Owning a guide dog can be life-changing.

Thousands rely on them for companionship, mobility and independence.

But there is a shortage after Covid disrupted the ability of Guide Dogs for the Blind to breed, train and socialise puppies.

As a result, average waiting time has risen to 18 months. Many people, such as Pride of Britain winner Jill Allen-King, fear being housebound before a new companion can be found.

To reduce the backlog, Guide Dogs for the Blind wants volunteers to help socialise puppies. It’s an essential cause.

Because by helping train these animals we can play a part in transforming lives.

Mini marvel

If the Beatles provided the soundtrack to the 60s it was Mary Quant who designed the decade’s look.

The fashion queen died peacefully at home yesterday, aged 93. Her skirts may have been mini but her impact was huge.
