Tornado damage recovery ongoing in northern Kentucky communities

Tornado recovery work continues in northern Kentucky. Trimble County has been cited as the most heavily damaged Kentucky county from last week’s severe weather.

A week ago severe storms roared through the Ohio River bordered area. Trimble County Emergency Management Director Andrew Stark said 89 homes saw damage, five to ten severe or destroyed. He said much of the hard cleanup is done and many are coping well.

“There are people of course that are in dire straights you know a lot of people that were affected didn’t have insurance. So, they’re on their own, essentially trying to figure all this out,” said Stark.

Stark noted one of the pressing issues is covering the cost of power restoration from utility poles to houses. The EM director added National Weather Service representatives are now looking at the possibility that two tornados came across Trimble County.

Stark said crews are meeting daily at 9:00 at Milton’s Fire Station One. He said there will be repair work to tackle in the weeks and maybe months ahead.

“We have begun kind of soliciting some support from the State from like VOAD groups, which is the volunteer groups throughout the State,” said Stark.

Stark said most of the ten or so businesses affected by severe weather have re-opened. While local and state disaster declarations have been made, Stark added officials are still hoping for a presidential disaster declaration. That would open the door to federal assistance.
