Tories urge Burnham to halt early release of dangerous prisoners

  • The Conservatives are demanding that Andy Burnham introduce emergency legislation to halt the early release of serious offenders, including convicted paedophiles and rapists, from prison.
  • A scheme allowing some inmates to be released after serving a third of their sentence was recently paused by the Prime Minister, following concerns raised by the family of police officer Andrew Harper .
  • This policy, introduced to ease prison overcrowding, could see approximately 6,000 offenders released in September, drawing widespread criticism over the potential release of dangerous individuals.
  • Andy Burnham has stated that no prisoners will be released under this policy until an urgent review is conducted, with a report expected within "the coming days and weeks".
  • However, the Conservatives argue that a review is insufficient and a change in law is necessary, while Labour defends its actions and criticises the Conservatives' record on prison capacity.
