'Top notch' student accommodation planned for former office building

An office building in Radford is set to be extended to create 'top notch' student accommodation and regenerate the area.

Plans to add a single level to the building in Forest Road West, and build on a nearby car park, have already been approved.

Internal works have already started and revised plans have been submitted to add another storey onto the existing building.

Subject to the latest plans being approved, up to 45 student bedrooms are expected to be created.

A spokesman for ARL Property Management Ltd, the London-based company behind the plans, said "everything will be top notch".

A new six-storey building is earmarked for a car park next to the existing property.

The spokesman said: "The extension on the car park; the footprint is exactly the same as the new application. The internal layout is changed.

"It's very near the university. It's about a 10-minute walk. I think it's two tram stops (away), which is very good. It's in a very good location.

"Plus the area needs to be regenerated. So we thought, by doing this, it will look nice and regenerate the whole area - it's a bit run down."

Plans have been submitted to Nottingham City Council for consideration.

The accommodation is hoped to be ready next year.

Chris Hobson, director of policy at the East Midlands Chamber, said: "Nottingham’s student population is an important part of the city’s economy.

"We’re lucky enough to have two of the UK’s best universities here in the city, so anything which can be done to encourage more people to choose Nottingham as an ideal place to live, study and start their careers has to be a good thing.”

Conservationist Hilary Silvester, executive chair of the Nottingham Civic Society, said: "As long as it fits in with the street scene, I think that would be the thing to see."

YOOP Architects was the company listed as the planning agent on behalf of the applicant.

Planning permission was previously given the green light to convert the site, before the latest application was submitted, in July 2018.
