Top Liverpool doctor makes point after Boris Johnson pictured without mask in hospital

A top Liverpool doctor has made a clear point after Prime Minister Boris Johnson was pictured not wearing a mask in a hospital.

Mr Johnson was pictured without a face covering while speaking to staff at Hexham Hospital in the North East on Monday, causing a massive backlash.

Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the hospital, advises that "anyone attending our hospitals and community settings must continue to wear a face-covering at all times to protect patients, visitors and staff."

And according to Chronicle Live, the PM was in fact reminded by staff of the need to wear a mask in all settings, shortly after the now infamous image was taken.

Following the backlash over the image, hospitals around the country have been reminding people of the important infection control rules in their facilities.

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which includes the Royal Liverpool and Aintree Hospitals, tweeted to remind people that visits to its hospitals must be pre-booked and that anyone visiting is asked to take a lateral flow test before doing so.

The trust added: "Please ensure you continue to follow infection control guidance, and wear a face mask whilst in our hospitals."

This last part was picked up on by one of the trust's most senior doctors, Peter Hampshire, who is clinical lead for critical care.

Dr Hampshire and his team have been at the sharp end of Liverpool's fight against Covid-19, battling numerous deadly waves of the virus.

He retweeted the hospitals mask wearing guidance and said: "Please note the below, whoever you are."

Yesterday cabinet minister Dominic Raab attempted to defend the Prime Minister for his lack of mask wearing.

He said: "I know the Prime Minister took the advice on the clinical setting that he was in and followed all the protocols and procedures that were applied there, and that’s what everyone should do.

"In the settings where it was required he did wear a mask.”
